Children Who Inhaled Rosemary and Lavander Essential Oil for 30 Days Significantly Improved Their ADHD

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects about 11 percent of the children in the U.S. (or 6.4 million), and the rates increase by 5% annually.

It is characterized by a pattern of hyperactivity, inattention, and/or impulsivity that interferes with everyday life, learning, and relationships.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reported that in the case of ADHD among very young children (2 to 5 years), the first-line treatment recommended is behavior therapy.

Yet, the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that about half of preschoolers suffering from this disorder used medication, and 1 in 4 fought the disease with medication only.

Despite the recommended therapy, only half of these children received it, and by the age of 6, the so-called “best practice guidelines” involves a combination of behavior therapy and medication.

Yet, this can be very harmful, as first of all, misdiagnosis of the disorder is very common, and the drugs used to treat it in these children can cause severe side-effects, like sleep issues, seizures, accelerated heart rate, seizures, etc. Fortunately, there is a natural and safe way to relieve the ADHD symptoms, and it includes essential oils.

How to make Lavender Oil for better sleep

If you diffuse lavender essential oil, it might come in handy when you have a headache or nausea.

Also, you can stop any breathing problems and deodorize a room, your body or any linen. It can be used as a sedative to relax you and give your several restful hours. It can be helpful in treating depression, lack of sleep and anxiety.

All you need is:

  • 4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
  • 1 drop of Bergamot Essential Oil

Next, add the essential oils to an electric diffuser and you will see the difference.

The beneficial properties of these concentrated, aromatic plant extracts have been used for millennia, in medical, cosmetic, emotional, and even spiritual purposes.

The name comes from “quintessential oil”. Namely, Aristotle believed that despite the four physical elements (fire, air, earth, and water), there was a fifth one, called quintessence, and it represented the “spirit” or life force of the plant.

Mix the ingredients in a glass or a bowl and massage it slowly and gently on the body to relieve you from the pain.

How to make oil to reduce your cellulite

You need:

  • 5 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 4 tsp of Carrier Oil
  • 5 drops of Fennel Essential Oil
  • 5 drops of Benzoin Essential Oil
  • 5 drops of Lemon Essential Oil

Mix everything in a 70ml amber glass bottle and shake the bottle until all oils blend together. Take 1 Tablespoon of the mixture and apply it on the area where you want to resolve the problem.

People extracted it and used ‘the spirit’ with the help of distillation or evaporation. Nowadays, these oils are a mixture of various beneficial plant chemicals and are extracted either through distillation, or cold pressing, used in the case of citrus essential oils.

The late Dr. Terry S. Friedmann, a physician who believed in the unity of the mind, spirit, and the body, found that vetiver oil (an Indian grass type) can be of great help in the treatment of children with ADHD.

It enhanced the brain wave patterns and behavior in school in 80% of children who inhaled it three times a day for a month.

Researchers used cedarwood essential oil, due to the high sesquiterpenes concentration (they make half of its constituents), that enhance the oxygenation of brain cells.

With the help of the Cedarwood Essential Oil, you can treat these problems

  • Insomnia (drop several drops on your pillow or put it in a diffuser.)
  • Nerve Inflammation (you can add 5 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil in your bath water.)
  • Terminates fungal infections
  • Helps with dry scalp (just mix several drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil with your shampoo.)
  • Helps with pain (step into a hot bath mixed with 5 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil.)

He claims that vetiver soothes the nervous system and stimulates the circulatory system, as:

“When the essential oil is inhaled, the microdroplets are carried to the limbic system of the brain, which is that portion that is the processing center for reason, emotion and smell, and to the hypothalamus, which is the hormone command center.

The essential microdroplets are also carried to the lungs where they enter the circulatory system.”

The positive effects on the brain activity were revealed via electroencephalograph (EEG), that measures electrical impulses moving through the brain, so it gave the researchers an opportunity to  determine whether the children’s brains were functioning primarily in a beta (i.e., alert) state or a theta state (i.e., lack of focus).

The vetiver essential oil was the one that caused the improvements in beta-theta ratios, and even the parents of the children noticed the improvements. As Friedmann reported:

“I received several letters from parents of the ADHD children stating that their behavior at home had improved for the better.

In several cases, they also stated that school educators informed them that their performance was observed to improve in the classroom. The report cards in some of the subjects had reflected this improvement as well.”

Vetiver Essential Oil

The vetiver is a plant that can grow up to 8 ft. The essential oil is created from its complex roots. It can be used for:

  • Relieve pain (headaches, toothaches, and pain in your muscles.)
  • Relax your muscles
  • Helps with the pain during menopause
  • Relaxing you and relieving any stress and anxiety
  • Makes you feel happier
  • Keep away Insects

Moreover, the Journal of Intercultural Ethnopharmacology recently published a study which indicates that this essential oil offers promising effects in the treatment of ADHD.

The findings of this animal study showed brain changes which indicate increased alertness, and in the case of humans, its inhalation led to faster reaction times and stimulation of sympathetic nerve activity.

According to the researchers:

“Ultimately, the stimulating effects of vetiver EO [essential oil] might be beneficial for learning and memory processes. In conclusion, the present findings provide information that vetiver EO may be used as a stimulant to improve alertness and task performance.”

Rosemary essential oil is another highly beneficial oil that boosts cognitive performance. Researchers in a study asked participants to complete tasks in a cubicle diffused with the aroma of rosemary essential oil, it improved their speed and accuracy.

Researchers explained:

“The unique relationships between plant essential oil aromas and any behavioral impact are potentially due to the complex molecular composition containing a range of alcohols, aldehydes, acids, phenols, esters, ketones and terpenes.

“[T]his study supports the suggestion that active compounds present in aromas may be absorbed through the nasal or lung mucosa and thus provide the potential for pharmacological activity …

The small size of these lipid-soluble compounds facilitates passage across the blood-brain barrier and consequently, they may produce effects at the neuronal level by either acting directly on receptor sites or indirectly by impacting on enzyme activity.”

The sedative properties of lavender oil, on the other hand, make it beneficial in the case of ADHD, since it improves sleep and treats trouble sleeping.

The following essential oils are also very beneficial and boost alertness as well:

  • Peppermint oil- soothes ADHD symptoms
  • Bergamot- reduces stress and anxiety
  • Ylang ylang- offers potent relaxing properties
  • Lemon-improves mood and prevents emotional outbursts
  • Frankincense- leads to mental peace and calamity
  • Eucalyptus- treats mental exhaustion and boosts blood flow to the brain

How to make Peppermint oil with the help of olive oil

You need freshly picked peppermint leaves and olive oil. Using a spoon, mash the peppermint leaves in a bowl. Take one jar and fill it up with the leaves until the jar is totally full.

Next step is to put the olive oil into the jar until the leaves are almost covered. Now, you need to give it time and leave the oil for 2 days in the sun and remember to shake it every 12 hours to avoid clotting. Keep the oil in a dark and dry place. The oil can be used for around 5 months.

The improvements in the behavior of the children are often noticed by their parents too. After seeing the benefits of the use of essential oils, Tina Sweet, a mother from Florida, shared her story on the WPTV and spoke about the treatment for ADHD in her 11-year-old son.

“Every single day I was getting (messages from teachers saying) he won’t stay on task. He won’t stay focused. He won’t stay in his seat. He’s talking. He’s just up and running around. He just could not stay focused. “

She claims that after the essential oil therapy, the grades of her son improved from Cs and Ds to As and Bs. Today, her son is in fifth grade, and is considered to be a “calm child.”

She claims that the oils are life-changing, as she completely avoided ADHD medications, and treated her son by applying essential oils to several body areas each morning and giving him an essential oil bracelet to wear.

The use of the Eucalyptus Essential Oil

  • You can treat sinus pain and allergies
  • Remove bad smell
  • Remove spots on clothing, carpets or linen
  • Helps with fever, cold or a flu
  • Can improve your hair looks
  • You can heal a wound
  • Easy any respiratory problems

Use Essential Oils in the treatment of ADHD

The two most effective ways to use essential oils in order to treat ADHD include inhalation and topical use.

For topical use, you should initially make sure that it won’t irritate the skin by applying it on a small area, and wait for a few hours. Then, if no symptoms appear, you can freely apply the oil very sparingly to the wrists, behind the ears, to the neck, or feet bottoms.

One of the simplest methods is to simply place a few drops of oil into a diffuser, or inhale the beneficial scent directly from the bottle 3 times daily.  Moreover, you can pour 3-5 drops of the oil into boiling water, cover the head with a towel, and inhale through the nose.

Rosemary and Lavender Side effects

Side effects of the Rosemary

The rosemary shouldn’t be used during the period of pregnancy. It might affect problems for the uterus, therefore, issues with the baby or even miscarriage. There isn’t enough information about using rosemary during pregnancy, but it is best to avoid it.

Also, within the rosemary, there is a chemical similar to aspirin, so, people with aspirin allergies should avoid it. If you have seizure disorders, avoid using them rosemary because it might make them even worse.

Side effects of the Lavender

This shouldn’t be used by children who still haven’t faced puberty because it might disturb their hormones. This can result in abnormal hormones which can lead to breast growth in a boy’s body, also known as gynecomastia.

Also, it shouldn’t be combined with any anesthesia or any other sedative, because it might slow down the central nervous system and this is very dangerous during a surgery.

Natural Treatments of ADHD

For even better effects, you should combine the use of essential oil with some other beneficial natural strategies.

You need to follow these tips:

Gluten sensitivity

Researchers have found that gluten sensitivity might be one of the main causes of many neurological and psychiatric conditions, including ADHD.

One 2011 study showed that celiac disease is “markedly overrepresented among patients presenting with ADHD,”16 and a diet free of gluten drastically improved the behavior of the children.

Food additives and GMO ingredients

ADHD can be seriously aggravated by numerous food additives, many of which have been banned in Europe. You should avoid the potential culprits, like sodium benzoate, Blue No. 1 and No. 2 food coloring; Green No. 3; Orange B; Red No. 3 and No. 40; Yellow No. 5 and No. 6.

Studies have shown that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, reduces the capacity of the body to eliminate foreign chemical compounds, so they accumulate and cause various diseases, including brain disorders.

An unhealthy gut

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, a medical doctor with a postgraduate degree in neurology, claims that toxicity in your gut can flow throughout the body and reach the brain, where it can lead to autism symptoms, depression, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, schizophrenia and other mental disorders.

Therefore, in order to treat the inflammation in the gut, you need to optimize the gut flora of your child. This requires a diet free of refined, processed foods, and high in fermented foods.

Too much sugar

High-sugar foods and starchy carbohydrates cause excessive release of insulin, which can cause hypoglycemia, that can, in turn, lead to increased secretion of glutamate in the brain. This results in depression, panic attacks, anxiety, agitation, and anger. Moreover, sugar leads to chronic inflammation in the body and disastrous effects on the mental health.

Animal-sourced omega-3 deficiency

Studies have found that children with low levels of omega-3 fats in the body have an increased risk of learning disorders and behavioral problems.

A 2007 study analyzed the effects of krill oil in the treatment of ADHD in adults, and the daily dose of 500mg for 6 months, led to improved ability to concentrate in more than 60 percent of the participants. Moreover, they said that their planning and social skills were improved by 50 percent.

Always check the expiry date on the label of the oil before buying it

It is very important to check the expiry date of the oil. There are several indications of an expired oil product. Check for the smell and texture of the oil.

Also, the color plays an important role when it comes to the expiry date. If the oil is outdated, it will release unpleasant smell and strange taste. There are numerous health risks that can arise from a spoilt oil.

Check if the ingredients of the oil are organic

Finding a good and not fake essential oil is very hard nowadays. Make sure that you check the ingredients of the oil and the place you are buying it from, as well as its reliability and license.

Many markets know how to sell you oil mixed with improper ingredients or even with water. Make sure that you check the texture, the color and read the label carefully.

To relieve the ADHD symptoms, you should try the following natural options as well:

  • Limit the exposure to artificial sweeteners, pesticides, cleaning products, detergents, monosodium glutamate (MSG), perfumes
  • Correct any nutrient deficiencies, and optimize the levels of magnesium, zinc, and vitamin B6
  • Allow your child to spend more time outdoors, in nature
  • Your child should have an active playtime daily, and even do some simple exercises
  • Reduce the time your child is exposed to radiofrequency microwave radiation, cell-phones, and electro-pollution
